Area Information

At the confluence of Pomme de Terre River and Lindley Creek, you will find Pomme de Terre Lake. This body of water in southwest Missouri has a surface area of over 7,820 acres, two sections of state park land that total nearly 700 acres, more than 650 campsites along the shore and two swimming beaches. You can even hike a trail that ends at a rock platform with a magnificent view of the water.

Pomme de Terre Lake was one of a series of lakes in the Osage River Basin that were constructed by the Corps of Engineers for flood control purposes. Construction began in 1957 and took four years, with an additional two years needed for the water to reach an acceptable level.

The lake was named after Pomme de Terre River. The expression "Pomme de Terre" is French and literally means "earth apple."

Visitors can fish for largemouth bass, white bass and crappie as well as tons of muskie. In fact, the lake boasts one of the best muskie catch ratios in the nation. There are also plenty of hiking opportunities around the water.

You'll also find an abundance of whitetail deer, wild turkey, duck, beaver, squirrel and geese as well as an occasional cougar or bobcat! Nearly half of the state's impounded waters await visitors here.
